This Privacy Policy describes how NOWSIS (ABN 88 646 097 994), an Australian charity
registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), collects, uses, stores, and discloses your personal information.
We’re committed to handling your information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). That’s the law that protects your privacy when you deal with Australian organisations.
This policy applies to all interactions with NOWSIS, whether you’re donating, volunteering, requesting help, subscribing to updates, or just browsing our website at www.nowsis.org.au.
If you give us information, this is what we do with it. And what we don't.
When you interact with NOWSIS, we collect personal information you choose to share. This may include:
When you visit our website, our hosting provider and analytics tools may automatically collect:
We generally do not collect sensitive information (such as health information, religious beliefs, or political opinions). The exception is if you apply for funding through Help a Sister and choose to provide health-related context to support your application. We only collect this with your consent, and we treat it with the highest level of confidentiality.
We use your personal information for the following purposes:
We don’t use your information for any purpose you wouldn’t reasonably expect, and we don’t sell or rent it to third parties for marketing purposes.
We share your information only with trusted service providers who help us run NOWSIS. These include:
Each of these providers has their own privacy policy. We choose providers that meet reasonable privacy and security standards, but we don’t control their practices and you should review their policies if you want full detail.
What we don't do
We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise commercially exploit your personal information. We do not share donor lists with other charities. We do not enable advertisers to target you based on your interaction with us.
Some of our service providers (particularly cloud hosting and email platforms) are based overseas or store data overseas, including in the United States and the European Union. By using our services, you consent to this transfer. We take reasonable steps to ensure overseas recipients handle your information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.
We store your personal information securely using industry-standard practices, including:
Despite these measures, no method of internet transmission or electronic storage is 100% secure. If we ever become aware of a data breach that’s likely to result in serious harm, we’ll notify affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.
We keep your personal information only as long as we reasonably need it for the purposes described in this policy, or as required by law. For example:
Our website uses cookies and similar technologies to help it function and to understand how visitors use it.
These are required for the website to work, including maintaining your session and remembering form inputs. You can’t disable these without breaking parts of the site.
We use Google Analytics (or a comparable provider) to understand which pages are most useful, where visitors come from, and how to improve the site. We don’t use this data to identify you individually. We’ve configured our analytics to anonymise IP addresses where possible.
You can disable cookies through your browser settings. Doing so may affect how the website functions for you.
Some browsers send a “Do Not Track” signal. There is no industry consensus on how to respond to this signal, so we currently don’t change our practices based on it. You can manage tracking through your browser and the opt-out tools provided by our analytics providers.
Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to:
We won’t charge you for accessing or correcting your information, and we’ll respond to reasonable requests within 30 days.
To exercise any of the rights above:
We’ll verify your identity before acting on the request, to protect you from anyone trying to
access your information without permission.
If you only want to unsubscribe from emails, the fastest way is to click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any email we’ve sent you.
If you believe we’ve mishandled your personal information or breached the Australian Privacy Principles, we want to know.
Step 1: Contact us first at privacy@www.nowsis.org.au. We’ll acknowledge your complaint within 7 days and aim to resolve it within 30 days.
Step 2: If you’re not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC):
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, particularly when:
When we make a material change (one that affects how we handle your information), we’ll notify subscribers by email and post a prominent notice on the website. Smaller changes (such as fixing typos or clarifying language) will be made silently.
The “Effective” date at the top of this page will always reflect when the current version was published.
For any privacy-related question or request:
We’re a small, volunteer-run charity. Email is the fastest way to reach us. We aim to respond within 48 hours.
This policy is meant to be transparent, not bureaucratic. If anything is confusing, we’d rather you ask than guess.
